What do we get asked the most about Accoya?

SB Joinery are trained users in Accoya. A large proportion of our windows and doors are manufactured in Accoya and we recommended this timber for windows, doors and external applications due to its outstanding properties.

Accoya wood represents a major development in wood technology. It enables the consistent supply of durable, dimensionally stable, non-toxic solid wood. This makes it an ideal material for manufacturing high performance, exterior timber products. Accoya is manufactured through the acetylation of plantation grown softwood.

Accoya treated wood has been thoroughly tested for dimensional stability, durability, paint retention and in-ground conditions to ensure optimal performance. Indeed, it is so reliable that for many years it has been – and continues to be – used by scientists as the benchmark against which other treatments and modified timbers are measured.

It is modified timber in which a process called acetylation, a cutting-edge patented technology, enables it to resist rot, defy the elements and stay strong for decades.

We have come up with a list of answers to the questions we get asked the most frequently when clients are considering using Accoya:

  • How stable is Accoya?
Accoya is dimensionally stable with swelling and shrinkage reduced by 75% or more. Doors and windows can open effortlessly all year round, therefore reducing maintenance costs. The process does not compromise the wood’s strength, instead hardness is increased and the high strength to weight ratio makes it suitable for challenging applications.
  • What is the durability of Accoya?
Lasting 50 years above the ground, 25 years in ground/freshwater Class 1 durability, Accoya surpasses even teak. Its virtually rot proof and has a 70 year minimum service life stated by TRADA. Accoya is also indigestible to a wide range of insects including termites, greatly reducing vulnerability.
  • Is it good for Coating?
With the swelling and shrinkage greatly reduced, the more stable surface allows coatings to adhere better. This improved stability means coatings last up to two times longer, it’s easier to coat and there is less preparation and sanding required.
  • What is the quality of Accoya like?
Because Accoya wood is modified all the way through, rather than just at the surface, when it is cut, planed or jointed there are no exposed unprotected surfaces in any dimension. This completely removes the need to apply additional chemical preservatives as is necessary with unmodified or envelope treated woods. There is consistent, measurable modification quality from surface to core.
  • What does Accoya look like?
Accoya wood is naturally beautiful. It is comparable in colour to the original source species, so that you can achieve a natural look or it can be easily coated in a wide range of colour finishes.

Accoya is the ultimate hassle-free product here at SB Joinery. We love it!
